I will never forget the year I ruined Christmas. I grew up in an average Australianfamily that celebrated Christmas the way good Australians do: with a decorated pinetree, plenty of presents and a hot English dinner – roast turkey, roast chicken, roast pork, roast every type of meat you could buy – all in the middle of summer. Each Christmas Eve, my parents would tune in to carols on the television, allowing my brother and I to stay up a little later than normal (but not too late or the presents would never be wrapped). Come six o’clock in the morning we would tiptoe down the hall. ‘Just a half hour more, then you can get up,’ mum and dad would moan, but to no avail. Wrapping paper was already flying around the room, with exclamations of delight accompanying the discovery of each thoughtfully chosen present: bikes, dolls, train sets, clothes, lollies and books...
